The project of the Office of the First Lady of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, “Connecting 1,500 Women and Young Girls to the Export Market”,implemented by the Center for Accelerated Women's Economic Empowerment (CAWEE),had a project“Connecting 50 Women to the Export Market” in Axsum town with the financial support that was secured from the Government of Canada in 2017.
The project focused on providing technical skills training to grass roots women in the sector of basketry. After the completion of the training, the trainees were able to organize their own enterprise and are now producing different kinds of basketry products. The basketry products of those women are this time well known in the country developing reputation.
In this regard, the project was able to connect the 50 women in Axsum to the export market. Beyond the export market connections that CAWEE facilitated through women owned and managed Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) involved in export, the trainees also have a shop in Axsum Town to sell their products to the tourists.
Through an exporting company, Salem’s Design woman owned and managed company,it was able to secure an exclusive contract, to supply exclusive basketry products to Ethiopian Airlines (designed with brand colors of the airlines – Green, Yellow and Red), where the Airlines is using the basketry product to serve its business class passengers, serving travel kits, bread and vegetables.
Through Salem’s Design, the Women’s group was able to sign a five years exclusive contract to supply its basketry products to Ethiopian Airlines.
Connecting grassroots women to high end domestic as well as export markets, which is the flagship program of CAWEE, the Center is proud of achieving its goals, i.e. in economically empowering grassroots women on one side and in building the export supply side capacities of women exporters involved in SMEs.
